San Francisco Giants shatter losing streak, humiliating Arizona D-backs 8-1 – MLB Update
San Francisco Giants put in a brilliant performance as the club comprehensively beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-1 at AT&T Park in San Francisco, California on Wednesday, August 3 to avoid a series sweep.
Their starter Ryan Vogelsong threw unplayable sinkerballs to crush the opposition. He held the D-backs’ batting squad scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when he allowed his only run to Cody Ransom on Zach Duke’s line drive single to left-field.
The 34-year-old dazzling hurler punched out seven batters, allowing only three walks on his six innings to grab his ninth win of the season.
The right-hand pitcher has lost only one game in 18 starts of this season, which has moved his ranks up in the best pitchers.
While he was wounding the opposing batting line-up, his own batters played two big innings. Giants’ made four runs each in the third and the fifth inning.
"We had two big innings. That's great for us," manager Bruce Bochy said. "It's been a while since we've had innings like that. ... This game was probably our biggest game to date of the season, with the losing streak. We had to stop the bleeding."
Pablo Sandoval, Chris Beltran and newly acquired pinch hitter Orlando Cabrera along with Cody Ross each added an RBI single to post four runs against the D-backs’ starter Jason Marquis in the third inning. Cabrera and Ross each added an RBI double in the
fifth inning to finalise the lead to 8-0.
Cabrera who joined his ninth team since 2004 punched three RBIs in his first game with the Giants after his trade from Cleveland Indians last week.
"Man, finally. I was starting to worry," said Cabrera, "I'd like to believe if you win the World Series you have to hit at some point. It's basically the same team."
After Vogelsong allowed a run in the seventh, his relievers took over the responsibly and each including Guillermo Mota, Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo did not let the D-backs gain any run.
The D-backs’ Marquis was shocked in the fourth inning as he saw his pitches under constant attack by the Giants. He consumed all of the eight runs over just four innings, which cause him his sixth loss of the 2011 regular season. It also stopped the D-backs
four game winning stint.
