San Francisco Giants sign outfielder Andres Torres – MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants have brought back their former outfielder Andres Torres by giving him one-year $2 million contract. Torres’ inclusion in the roster will provide a good depth in the outfield as he possesses large Major League experience.
Torres last played for the Mets and finished with great numbers. He played with big heart and achieved .230 hitting average along with three homers, 35 RBIs and .327 OBP. Not only in the last season, but overall his career batting average is also quite consistent.
His seven-year Major League career is consistent at .241 hitting average along with 30 homers, 153 RBIs and .320 OBP. Looking at last season’s hitting average along with his career batting average; Torres potentially will prove a very good player for the
Giants to defend this season’s World Series title.
“Our strategy is just different, developing guys and bringing them through the system and sprinkling in free agents and trades when it makes sense, We've done free agents before, but we're trying to do more of a homegrown thing,” Giants President Larry Baer
said Thursday and explained about Torres’ signing.
Baer said in detail, "You can't let what any other team does alter your strategy. That would be a mistake, If we're going to look at the Dodgers spending all this money and say we're going to be free-agent-centric, we don't think that would be smart."
Later manager Bruce Bochy wrote in a text message and hoped for a better beginning with Torres, “Great to have him back! He gives us that much more versatility and character in the clubhouse.”
In the meanwhile, many experts are also giving positive feedback on Giants this recent deal with Torres. The Giants, who are current World Series Champions, played their offseason cards with quite intelligence. Unlike other Major League Baseball teams, they
did not spend tens of millions of dollars in free agent market; instead, the Giants’ signed some of the good free agents with short term contracts.
Some say that the Giants’ late development regarding signing new players was already a part of their offseason plane and which they implemented with quite smartness.
