San Francisco Giants snatch the series opener against Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2: MLB Update
San Francisco Giants romped to a 3-2 victory in the first outing against the league rival Pittsburgh Pirates at the PNC Park in Pennsylvania on Tuesday night to take 1-0 lead in three-game series.
The centre-fielder, Darren Ford, led the Giants' charge with a brilliant two runs in single at-bat to help the club nip a four-game losing streak. Ford touched a grounder hit towards the second baseman in the tenth innings to occupy the first base. Freddy
Sanchez then hit a grounder to the second base, allowing Ford to test his strength in running, who surprisingly made third base.
Ford was amazed himself and explained the scenario in his words citing the closer Joel Harahan’s wayward throw.
He said, "I didn't go at first. Not at first, but he just glanced at me. He did not stop me as an infielder -- he did not stop me; he just glanced at me. And once he just glanced at me and then lobbed it over to first, I just took off and let my God-given
talent just take over."
Ford also participated in a 2-2 tying run in the eighth inning when he landed the ground as a pinch runner. The Giants earned all scores on the actions that did not engage any punch. The Giants' first run also came from the sacrifice-fly in sixth inning.
The Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy, seemed completely impressed with Ford in post-game interview with the reporters.
Bochy said, "There's no fear in him; he's not afraid to make a mistake, and that's what you love about him,” Bochy further added, referring the 10th inning run. "I tell you what, that was one of the most impressive displays of speed I've seen on a baseball
field," Bochy added, referring to the 10th inning run.
The Giants' starter, Matt Cain, went lazy in the second inning and allowed a huge 419-feet long homer to the Pirates’ Garrett Jones. However, Cain immediately retaliated and then tossed three shutout innings without giving any run. He again went loose in
the sixth and allowed another run, this time on a sacrifice fly by Lyle Overbay.
Matt managed six strikeouts, allowed one walk and two runs in the sixth inning. Relievers Jeremy Affeldt, Ramon Ramirez, Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and closer, Brian Wilson, did not allow any run in their one inning spell each.
The Pirates’ starter held the Giants scoreless in his first five innings, but gave a run in sixth inning. However, he made six strikeouts, allowed three walks and four hits over the sixth inning. The relievers’ Evan Meek and closer Hanrahan both gave one
run each to 3-2 loss.
