San Francisco Giants snatches 4-2 win over Cincinnati Reds - MLB Update
The San Francisco Giants romped to a 4-2 win in the fourth outing against the Cincinnati Reds at AT&T Park on Sunday, June 12, to tie the series at 2-all.
The Giants’ first baseman Aubrey Huff dominated with the bat as he blistered three hits to earn two RBI singles, which took the Giants back into game after starter Jonathan Sanchez allowed two RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning.
The Giants went under a 2-0 deficit when the Reds’ Scott Rolen and Edgar Renteria each scored an RBI single against Sanchez, who otherwise was enjoying a scoreless game.
"We pitch 6-7 innings, we're fine with our bullpen," Sanchez said. "Just wanted to keep the game close."
However, the Reds’ starter Edinson Volquez, who has tossed three scoreless innings, failed to defend this lead and gave away an RBI scoring hit to Aubrey Huff in the bottom of fourth. Volquez another RBI single in the sixth inning to Cody Ross.
The Reds’ manager Dusty Baker then replaced Volquez with Jose Arredondo, who gave base stealing shots to Pat Burrell and Andres Torres while allowing an intentional walk to Miguel Tejada before handing over the responsibility to Bill Bray up the middle of
the sixth inning. The move did not work out for the Reds as Bray gave a sacrifice fly to Nate Schierholtz and an RBI single to Aubrey Huff as the Giants acquired 4-2 lead.
"Those leadoff walks come back to haunt you, which it did us at least," Reds’ manager Dusty Baker said. "We really have to tighten up that part of our game."
Sanchez managed to complete his six innings without allowing further runs. He walked and struck-out five batters. After Sanchez passed over the ball to reliever Ramon Ramirez, the Reds were optimistic to make a come-back in the game but Ramirez tossed an
exceptional inning to earn his second win of the 2011 season.
"That's something we have been needing -- those guys in the heart of the order doing some damage," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We've been struggling to score runs."
Then Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and closer Brian Wilson restricted the opposition and the World Series defending champions cemented their 37th win of the season. Lopez took two batters on just eight pitches while all four pitches Romo tossed were strikes.
Wilson took out one batter and allowed a single hit in the last inning.
The Giants will now take on to Arizona Diamondbacks in the first of three game series on June 14 after enjoying an off day on Monday, June 13. The Reds will now visit Los Angeles Dodgers for three-game series starting from tomorrow, June 13.
