San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain agrees to six year deal – MLB News
The San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Matt Cain has agreed to a six year deal worth $127.5 million on late Monday night making him richest player on the current roster.
The team management announced that the deal has been finalised with the mutual consent of both sides leaving all the previous issues behind of Cain’s potential trade and extension matters.
The Giants, earlier at the start of the offseason, have also persuaded Cain and his agent for contract extension, but with few differences, led both sides to nowhere ending the extension talks during the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training.
Cain on his recent contract said, “This is a decision that was made pretty simple for us. It was a process and it was a negotiation. It was good for my family and I to go through all of that, to be able to know this is probably going to be our lifetime as
a Giant, that’s pretty cool for us.”
Later Giants general manager Brian Sabean said for Cain and his contract extension. Sabean said, “Ensuring that Matt remained a Giant beyond this season was a top priority for the organization. Matt is an integral part of the team whose performance on the
mound will be one of the keys to our success for years to come.”
Cain, who started his professional baseball career with the Giants in 2005, is feeling quite a part of the franchise now. During his seven-year career so far, he has won Willie Mac award along with two selections of All-Star game and as well as one prestigious
World Series title.
Cain is no doubt a world class player having 3.35 ERA along with 69-73 win loss record 1085 strikeouts and consistent 1.20 WHIP.
His latest contract extension is a healthy sign for the Giants who needed a good backup for the future seasons. Cain on the other hand, is a utility player and can play an active role in the Giants’ race towards World Series. With very less years, Cain has
also proved his game and now considered as role player in the team which somewhat guarantees a more consistent output.
