San Francisco Giants struggle against Washington Nationals 5-2 - Part 2
As the San Francisco Giants suffer another defeat at the hands of the Washington Nationals, one can’t help but wonder what happened to the team that won the World Series just last year. The Giants that are playing now seem to lost have their fire.
Ivan Rodriguez and Jordan Zimmermann contributed significantly to the Nationals victory.
"It's fun to watch him play when he comes to life," said team-mate Jason Werth, who was 3 for 4. "It reminds me of the young Pudge Rodriguez, when I used to watch him play back in the day. He's still got a lot to offer. He's an icon of the game, and it's
a privilege to play with him."
Drew Storen pitched in the ninth inning, and secured his fifth save in equal chances as the Nationals won their third game out of the four game series.
Alex Cora has a couple of hits during the match which made this particular one his first multi-hit game since the season started. Overall it was definitely team effort that aided the Nationals in their triumph over the Giants. "It was pitching and defense,"
Cora said. "Zimmermann did a great job, Pudge came up big and we did enough offensively to get the W."
The second inning was the only time that the Giants managed to earn some runs. Miguel Tejada advanced to third base on an infield single as Mike Fontenot doubled off the wall towards right-field. Nate Schierholtz earned a run for San Francisco as he hit
a blooper that ended up on the left field line between Laynce Nix, the left fielder and Ian Desmond, the short-stop. Schierholtz ended up getting a two run double out of the play.
In the duration of six innings, Matt Cain let three runs and six hits pass him by as he managed to strike-out five and let three walk. In the third innings he slipped as he threw a careless pitch that proved to be costly for his team. With the bases loaded
Cain allowed Rick Ankiel to score which ultimately tied the game at two runs from each side.
After Cora belted out a RBI single, it started a sort of chain reaction within the Nationals as the runners that were perched in scoring positions singled in the second, third and fourth innings. By the fourth inning, Washington was finally ahead of the
Giants as Jerry Hairston hit a RBI groundout with runners on second and third base.
The eighth inning saw Rodriguez single towards the centre as Danny Espinosa and Desmond scored. Ivan was later thrown out at second base as he attempted to advance on the play.
