San Francisco Giants stumble as St. Louis Cardinals win 6-1 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals denied a 3-0 victory to San Francisco Giants as they beat them by 6-1 at AT&T Park, San Francisco on Sunday, April 10.
Sunday’s game was supposed to bring a sense of relief for the Giants as they had struggled in the start of the series despite playing as the defending champions. They had won their last two matches against the Cardinals. However, a measured game plan with
a careful strategy allowed the Cardinals to stop the Giants.
The game began with Barry Zito pitching for San Francisco, faced by Ryan Theriot of St. Louis. Zito took on Theriot, Colby Rasmus and Albert Pujols, disallowing any of the three batters of Cardinals to hit and score. San Francisco’s batters, on the other
hand, came down aggressively against Kyle Lohse who was pitching for St. Louis. Pablo Sandoval struck and singled to right where Freddy Sanchez scored the Giants’ first run.
Down 1-0, the Cardinals came back with David Freese’s massive hit, allowing Allen Craig to score, as Freese himself went for second advancing on a throw. That levelled the score whereby the game saw some exciting baseball by both teams. However, the sixth
inning had a lot to offer for the Cardinals as they had seen in Zito of San Francisco an opportunity worth utilising.
Freese struck Zito, doubled to left where Holliday scored, following Skip Schumaker was able to score a two run double, to deep centre where Craig and Freese scored. Zito by then had walked five batters that was no less than a striking blow to the hopes
of San Francisco to complete their 3-0 win at home.
Kyle Lohse troubled the Giants’ batters with his unplayable fastballs, allowing no major hit to the rivals. Cardinals, on the other hand, had to maintain their lead and nobody else could be better suited to achieve that than Matt Holliday. He struck him,
singling to right where Colby Rasmus scored.
That did not stop there. A 4-1 lead was perhaps not enough for the Cardinals. It was Freese who, like Holliday, took on Guillermo Mota. He homered to left to score another run. Mota got three hits in the inning which showed how easily he had become a target
to the Cardinals for maximum advantage.
The eighth inning of the game effectively marked the dominance of St. Louis that then did not look back again. Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse and Trever Miller were not easy to play for the Giants who saw their batters failing to deliver. Unable to score any in the
9th inning, the Giants lost the match 6-1.
The Giants that had raised their World Series championship flag only last Friday, in their home opener, but could not enhance their jubilant enjoyment with another victory.
