San Francisco Giants sweep Oakland Athletics 5-4 - MLB Update
The reigning World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants defeat Oakland Athletics 5-4 to sweep the three game series at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Sunday, May 22.
The partnership between Emmanuel Burriss and Darren Ford made the hit in the eleventh inning possible, as it was that tie breaking run that guaranteed a complete sweep of the Oakland.
Manager for the Giants, Bruce Bochy was more than thrilled with his team’s consistent performance as he commented, "I feel like we're saying this every night, but to win this many consecutive games at home is pretty amazing."
The Giants did not wait for long before they started belting out hits. They put the first run of the game on the scoreboard in the very first inning as Freddy Sanchez doubled to the left-field and Andres Torres scored, which effectively gave the team a 1-0
lead.
Buster Posey elongated his hitting streak to eleven games as he scored in the third inning after a throwing error by the third baseman Adam LaRoche. Pat Burrell moved to the third base during the play.
The Athletics decided to step up their game after giving the Giants a 2-0 lead. They dominated the sixth, seventh and eighth inning, belting out runs and cashing in on any opportunities presented. Josh Willingham kicked things off for Oakland as he blasted
a home run that covered a distance of 398 feet. His team backed him up by putting three more runs on the scoreboard that was at 2-1. Coco Crisp doubled to left as Cliff Pennington scored. He was followed by Daric Barton who singled to the left as Crisp scored.
Mark Ellis got the last hit from the Athletics’ side on a sacrifice fly from Hideki Matsui.
With the Athletics taking the lead, the Giants pulled up their socks as Nate Schierholtz tied the score with a home-run in the eighth inning that flew for 344 feet. Both teams pitched immaculately as the game carried on to the eleventh inning with none of
the teams coming up with a run that would end the game.
Burriss and Ford teamed up to fix that situation in the bottom of the eleventh inning when Burriss singled and Ford scored effectively breaking the tie, and securing the win for the Giants.
As the Giants celebrated their sweep, the Athletics were reminded of their five game consecutive losing streak.
