San Francisco Giants trounce the Houston Astros 3-2 – MLB News
The San Francisco Giants on Saturday, July 14, continue their winning streak as they beat the Houston Astros 3-2 at AT&T Park, San Francisco. This was the second win for the Giants after they beat the Astros by 5-1 in the first game.
With the win, the Giants now stand first at the National League West. The win came in the 12th inning when Pablo Sandoval scored from second base after a throwing error by Hector Sanchez.
For Sanchez, nonetheless, it was a special day. The player was 6-for-4. The four hits was the highest of his career and came at a very auspicious time for him.
"That's what we have to do," said Sanchez, who was excited after the marvellous win. "We have to keep working, keep playing and never give up. It felt amazing to get that hit."
As for the error that was committed in the ninth inning, Sanchez regretted it. But there was an explanation for it.
"I tried to go too quick on that play," Sanchez said. "I had a lot of time ... but that's what happens when you try to do too much."
Tim Lincecum, the Giants' starting pitcher, did not allow any run in his magnificent eight inning spell, apart from that throwing error that Sanchez committed. The win gave him all the more reason to come prepared for the next encounter.
"I'm going to take the small steps as they come," Lincecum said. "Even though we won I'm going to go home and reflect on this and think about the things I did well and try to duplicate them in my next start."
The Giants scored their first run in the fifth as Melky Cabrera singled to right followed by the run made possible by Sanchez’s hit, making it 2-0 for San Francisco. Houston Astros levelled the score in the ninth inning, but could not retain it as Sanchez finally hit the winning run in the 12th.
With the magnificent win, the Giants have now paved the way for the series sweep in Sunday’s game. From what it seems, they will comfortably do it.
