San Francisco Giants unable to manage a single run lose to Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 - Part 1
The San Francisco Giants struggled as they were unable to score a single run and lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0 at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on Wednesday, April 27.
In his last start in Florida, James McDonald was tagged for eight runs within three innings which was almost a week ago. Obviously there is quite a difference from his performance then and now. According to Chris Snyder, the catcher for Pittsburgh, it is
because McDonald stopped relying on his fastball as much as he used to and decided to throw more changeups and curveballs.
"He mixed it up really well," Snyder said. "He needed that start. He needed to get something going, something to give him confidence."
Six brilliant innings were pitched by McDonald to contribute as he snatched his first victory of the season as well. McDonald let four hits pass him by as well as four walks and managed to strike-out three.
Madison Bumgarner only allowed one run and five hits, as he had seven strike-outs and a single walk through the duration of six innings. The Giants lost their fifth game out of the six they have played.
"I thought Madison did a great job," San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said. "He kept his poise and stayed away from the crooked number that has killed him. It's tough to not get runs for him. It'd be big to get him his first win."
A five hitter was completed collectively by Chris Resop, Joel Hanrahan, Mike Crotta and Joe Beimel for the Pirates. Hanrahan got Miguel Tejada to the ground into a double play that wrapped up the game with runners at first and second base.
McDonald was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers at the very last minute on the July 31 trading deadline.
The Pirates put in a tremendous performance to restrict the Giants’ offence and not allow any runs during the game. It was a team effort that saw them play aggressively and dominate the Giants in every aspect of the game. The Giants seemed to be struggling
against the Pirates defence. They were unable to score a single run during the game.
The Giants are lacking any type of consistency in their offence. One day they perform brilliantly, the next day they collapse and are unable to put in a decent performance. This inconsistency is starting to seriously hurt the team, as their opponents are
beginning to find weaknesses in their game play. The Pirates are gaining good form and will be looking to carry their winning momentum into their next series. The Giants are going to head back to the drawing board and make necessary changes before the season
slips away from them.
