San Francisco and Seattle Seahawks aim to take lead in NFC West – NFL Preview
After a miserable defeat in Week 6 game against defending champion New York Giants, the San Francisco 49ers are once again going to take a shot at securing lead in National Football Conference (NFC) West as they host the division rivals Seattle Seahawks
in Week 7 game on Thursday, October 18, at Candlestick Park.
On the other hand, Seahawks, who are presently on a two-game winning streak after defeating Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots, are hoping to further stretch the winning run.
The team that wins this game will take lead in NFC West, which has become very competitive as 49ers, Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals are tied at its top having a record of 4-2 each.
49ers’ defeat against Giants was not something totally unexpected, but the way they were defeated has raised many questions on their ability to perform at various positions.
49ers were badly exposed on the offence and defence as they only scored three points in the entire game, while conceding 26 points. Their quarterback Alex Smith was intercepted thrice, which itself is a worrisome sign for the team.
49ers are hoping to get back to winning ways as soon as possible, but they also know that the task is not easy, especially when the Seahawks are in prime form and coming to this game after defeating the Pats.
49ers running back Frank Gore said of Seahawks and Week 7 game:
“Seattle, they’re playing great ball. We want to be the top dog in the division and we know that they’re going to come in here and play their behind off. As long as we get back to being us – offence, defence, special teams – we should come out on top.”
Meanwhile, it is not going to be smooth sailing for Seahawks either. Even though 49ers were not unable to perform well against Giants, they have all the skills that are required to counter their opponents.
If Seahawks want to defeat 49ers, they must take a thorough look at Week 6 game between 49ers and Giants.
Giants have provided a blueprint to other teams in the league seeking to outclass San Francisco and if Seahawks are able to learn from Giants they can have an edge over 49ers.
However, 49ers are very well coached and second-year coach Jim Harbaugh is not going to allow his team to repeat the same mistakes again. 49ers will enter the game with a new strategy and Seahawks have also acknowledged that Harbaugh’s tactics might not
be easy to deal with.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said of 49ers and Harbaugh:
“The better the coach, the better the challenge. Jim’s done tremendous. He’s done a fantastic job at Stanford and getting this thing started, you can’t do a whole lot better than he did last year. They were that close to being on top of everything."
