San Jose Sharks' Ryane Clowe sits out on Tuesday against Columbus Blue Jackets -NHL Update
San Jose Sharks came out of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Weekend with a bang as they humiliated the leagues weakest team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, 6-0 on Tuesday night, January 31, 2012, but despite the stunning win, they were playing
without their star left winger, Ryane Clowe.
Clowe, a 29-year-old forward from Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Canada, had a little scare in prior to the All-Star Game break as the team feared concussion related symptoms, but turned out to be a facial fracture instead.
As there is still a concussion epidemic going on in the league, whenever a player goes out with such symptoms, teams can do anything but panic.
Clowe struck his face on the boards during their game against the Minnesota Wild on January 10 but managed to play in the next three games up until the ASG break.
“When I came off the ice when it happened in Minnesota, that’s what they asked me afterward when they knew there was something wrong,” Clowe said. “My nose was bleeding, but I didn’t feel anything like that. I know I struck my face off the boards, but as
far as my head and all that, that felt good. Right away, I had no issues with that. We flew after the game and that was fine.”
Playing in the following games after being injured clearly meant Clowe was capable of going on, but finding out that it could be aggravated if he does so, sitting out was the best option for the player.
Facing another hit on the spot could mean further complications to the injury and potentially call it an end to the 2011-2012 NHL regular season for him, something Clowe definitely wants to avoid at all costs.
“I guess the biggest worry is just getting hit there again,” Clowe added. “I don’t want to wear a cage obviously when I come back.”
At the moment, Ryane Clowe has 26 points (9 goals, 17 assists) in 42 games played so far. He was selected as the 175th overall pick during round-six of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and has stayed with the Sharks ever since.
