San Jose Sharks Attack the Calgary Flames and come out on top by three goals – NHL update
Cory Sarich of the Calgary Flames tried to fight off the San Jose Sharks during the final period, but the Flames remained unsuccessful on Wednesday at the HP Pavilion Arena in San Jose and ended up losing 6-3. The Flames remain stuck under the ninth placed
Dallas Stars with 85 points, while the Sharks are still grabbing points to close in on the runners-up Detroit Red Wings, now just under by one with 94.
It was a tough first period for Calgary who was down by two at the end. Torrey Mitchell opened up the match at the three minute mark, Jarome Iginla answered back four minutes later off a right end pass by Olli Jokinen. Andrew Desjardins who remained in a
goal-scoring drought the whole season notched his first in after Iginla.
Cory Sarich tied up the game with six minutes remaining in hope of extending it later. Patrick Marleau fired twice successfully on Miikka Kiprusoff in a 2:34 time frame, one of them during an open net power play, ending the first half 4-2.
Kiprusoff’s four time flop during the first period must have brought a flashback of being taken out during their last match with Anaheim. This time Coach Brent Sutter remained confident in his goalie and didn’t replace him with backup Henrik Karlsson.
Rene Bourque netted his 26th of the season in a few minutes past the middle of the second. He was answered by Torrey Mitchell who got his first career double goal night after taking control of a loose puck.
The Flames had to start the final 20 minutes shorthanded after Anton Babchuk was penalised late in the previous period for tripping Ben Eager. Cory Sarich and Ryan Clowe went head-to-head or more like fist-to-head in the opening minute and both were awarded
a major five minute penalty for fighting. San Jose’s superstar rookie Logan Couture extended his highest scoring first season in the league to 28 as he finalised the match for his team twelve minutes into the final.
Calgary helped San Jose lengthen their winning streak to four in a row as they go on to face Los Angeles on Thursday. They might have only six games left before the playoffs start, but Calgary still has time to get their act together. Facing the Oilers
on Saturday, they’ll have a chance to grab an easy two points which would tie them with Anaheim for eighth place.
