San Jose Sharks captain Joe Thornton headed to Switzerland to play amidst Lockout -NHL Update
It might not be easy leaving but San Jose Sharks captain, Joe Thornton, is taking the next flight out of the United States and will be continuing to play in Switzerland amidst the next National Hockey League (NHL) regular season being in serious threat of
being locked out.
For Thornton, “It sucks leaving here, but I’ve still got to play”, he said according to David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, and it is not determined yet whether or not the regular season of the NHL will be able to start on time or not.
Some state that players like Thornton should have waited, but the time is now whether Thornton will be leaving to play or staying in the US and see the situation start. It is also not clear at the moment which team Thornton will be playing for, but it should
be expected in the upcoming days.
"I just want to go and play and get some games in and some practices in, just stay loose and feel good," added Thornton, who is expected to be in Switzerland by the end of the week.
According to the insidebayarea.com, Thornton will be joining the New York Rangers forward, Rick Nash, in Davos Switzerland, since he is also gearing up to make his exit along with some rumours of youngster Logan Couture also popping up.
Douglas Murray, defenseman for the San Jose Sharks, is still thinking whether or not to leave and join a foreign league but is expected to make his decision final in the upcoming days.
The people who will be suffering the most is without the doubt the fans, and especially those fans who have bought season tickets of the San Jose Sharks. For them, the San Jose franchise has the following statement on their official website,
"We appreciate your patience and ask that you continue to bear with us."
One thing that will be a saviour for many teams who have lost their players due to a lockout, is the fact that the agreement between the NHL and foreign leagues will allow the two to recall players at such moments if a season is back in play.
