San Jose Sharks defeat the Calgary Flames 4-3 in shootout – NHL Recap
The San Jose Sharks defeated the Calgary Flames 4-3 after an exciting shootout at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday. The Flames were looking to win the game and make their way back into the National Hockey League play-off cut, as the Sharks were looking
to pull away from the tight battle behind them and close in on the Conference leaders. Ryane Clowe of the Sharks was named as the Player of the Game for scoring the important equalising goal.
There were goals right from the start with both teams scoring a goal apiece during the first 20 minutes of play. The second period saw the Flames leading at the end. The final period looked to end goalless, but the Sharks managed to level the scores with
a late goal. The game went into over-time where no goals were scored, but the Sharks managed to emerge as 4-3 winners of the game after the shootout.
The Sharks were quick out of the blocks and they managed to score early in the fourth minute to get into lead. The goal was scored by Devin Setoguchi from a brilliant back-hand shot with Logan Couture making the assist.
The Sharks and the Flames both came up with some brilliant pieces of play that saw coming across several goal scoring opportunities. However, they failed to find the back of the net during the early part of the period. The Flames managed to score in the
19th minute to level the scores. The goal was scored by Anton Babchuk from a well placed flick. The score remained level 1-1 at the end of the period. During the course of the period the Flames made 9 goal attempts, as the Sharks ended the period
making 10.
The second period of the game saw both teams continuing on the same roads, as the Sharks managed to score in the 10th minute through Kyle Wellwood to get into the lead once again. The Flames responded to this with some strong offensive attacks.
The Flames scored through David Moss to level the game in the 16th minute and bagged another goal in the 18th minute which was scored by Niklas Hagman from a flick-shot to get into the lead. The period ended with the Flames leading
3-2 with the Flames making 8 goal attempts, as the Sharks managed 10.
The final 20 minutes of play saw the Flames attacking at the start after which they went on the back-foot to defend their lead and win the game. It was a success for most of the period but unfortunately, the Sharks scored in the 18th minute through
Ryane Clowe to level the scores. The scores remained level on 3-3 with the Sharks making 10 goal attempts in the final period, as the Flames came up with just five shots on goal.
The game went into over-time where no goals were scored. This lead to a shootout period, in which Ryane Clowe, managed to score a goal and take the Sharks to victory 4-3 in the end.
