San Jose Sharks defeat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 after shootout – NHL Recap
The San Jose Sharks beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 after a shootout in an exciting game at the Consol Energy Centre on Tuesday. The Avalanche has been struggling recently and slipped to the 14th spot in the National Hockey League Western Conference,
as the Sharks have moved within four points of the second seeded Detroit Red Wings.
The game was expected to be a one sided encounter but the Avalanche came up with a brilliant performance that saw them scoring the opening goal in the final period. The six games winning streak was at stake, but the Sharks managed to score and get level
as the regulation time ended. There were no goals in over-time, but the Sharks managed to emerge as 2-1 winners of the game after shootout. Antti Niemi, goalie of the Sharks was the Star of the Game as he made 18 saves.
The game started off on the slower side with both teams not given any space, as the defence of the teams dominated the game in the period. Neither of the teams was given any easy scoring chances due to some very tight and skilful defence.
The game progressed with both teams trying desperately to score and get going on the scoring board, but this did not happen. The period ended without any goals with the scores deadlocked on 0-0. During the course of the period, the Sharks made 9 goal attempts
while the Avalanche managed 5.
The second period was again a reflection of the first period which saw both teams constructing some brilliant plays and despite the shots on goal, they were not able to bag any goals. During the second period, their passing and shooting were better but this
did not help the cause.
The period ended with the scores still level on 0-0 with the Sharks making 10 goal attempts during the period, as the Avalanche made 5 attempts.
The final 20 minutes started off with the Avalanche making a brilliant start which saw them scoring in the second minute through Erik Johnson during the power-play to get into the lead.
Both teams continued to attack and it looked as if the Avalanche would win the game. However, this did not happen, as the Sharks successfully scored through Joe Thornton from a powerful strike to level the scores in the 18th minute.
The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 with the Sharks making 11 goal attempts in the period, as the Avalanche managed 7. The game went into over-time, but no goals were scored. In the end, it was the Sharks who won the game after a shootout with
the score on 2-1.
