San Jose Sharks rally in second period to cool down Detroit Red Wings 5-2 -NHL Match Update
Seeing how Detroit was on a roll and suddenly had their four-game winning streak snapped against their last matchup against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday was certainly disappointing for them. The Red Wings could not regain their momentum and lost their
second straight to a rowdy San Jose Sharks team, 5-2, Thursday night, November 17, 2011, at the sold-out HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, United States.
San Jose certainly has one of the best records in the National Hockey League (NHL) ever since the 2011-2012 NHL regular season kicked off, 10-5-1, but having played fewer games than their opponents, the Sharks still do not have enough points to take the
top spots of the Western Conference.
Detroit Red Wings came strong in the opening period as Niklas Kronwall potted the first of the night during a late power play opportunity with less than three minutes left to play to give the visitors a lead to work on, but San Jose snapped that momentum
and levelled the contest as Joe Pavelski entered double digits for his 10th of the season shorthanded.
"We were playing well in the first period", Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg said. "We held on to the puck, got it to the net and ended the period tied. In the second period they took advantage of their chances".
Sitting at the 10th spot in the Western Conference with 19 points, the Red Wings are starting to wonder about where they want to be as the season progresses and have to start working on that soon before it’s too late.
"We're at the point now where we have to decide what kind of team we want to be", Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "You can't let this snowball on you. You have to win on the road and you have to win at home".
Joe Thornton, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Torrey Mitchell scored three straight for the Sharks to give them a commanding lead heading into the third period, but before Detroit could even pot their second, Brad Winchester scored another San Jose goal midway through
the third followed by a Red Wings scoring four minutes later with Daniel Cleary during the power play.
