San Jose Sharks sign Forward Andrew Desjardins and Goalie Alex Stalock to 1-year Deals –NHL Update
San Jose Sharks signed two players on Monday before they became free agents in the upcoming National Hockey League (NHL) free agency, despite both being unable to play most of the games last season.
Andre Desjardins and Alex Stalock agreed to a one-year contract each, of which the financial details were not disclosed.
Andrew Desjardins was only able to play 17 games in the previous 2010-2011 season with San Jose and recorded three points, one goal, two assists, with a plus-minus rating of -1.
The 24-year-old also made an appearance in Sharks' playoff run, playing three games and scoring one goal.
The past season was his first in the NHL, and when the Can adian native from Lively, Ontario, is not playing in the major league, he plays the centre position with San Jose’s farm club, Worcester Sharks in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Alex Stalock, the 23-year-old from St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, was drafted by San Jose Sharks in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft as the 112th overall pick during round-four.
He is Sharks' backup goalie and performs as the teams’ fourth goalie behind Antti Niemi, Antero Niittymaki and Thomas Greiss.
Stalock also plays for San Jose’s farm club, Worcester, and played 61 games in the 2009-2010 season with Worcester for a record of 39 wins, 19 losses and 2 shootout/overtime losses.
He played only one game with Sharks last season and won with his nine blocked shots and a 1.000 saves percentage.
The backup goalie for San Jose could not play in any games after that due to an injury he sustained on his left leg, three days after his first game on February 1, which later turned out to be a season-ending injury.
San Jose made qualifying offers to a number of other forwards as well, including Ben Ferriero, John McCarthy, Jamie McGinn and Frazer McLaren and is yet to officially induct them back into the team before the free agency begins on July 1.
Making the Western Conference Finals for two playoffs straight, and not being able to penetrate through to the Stanley Cup Finals, San Jose is set on making a few tweaks to change its fortunes next season.
