San Jose Sharks sign Justin Braun, Tommy Wingels, Andrew Desjardins -NHL offseason Update
San Jose Sharks continued their re-signing process by extending the contracts of defenseman, Justin Braun, along with forward, Tommy Wingels and Andrew Desjardins to respective contracts on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
The financial terms and conditions of the separate deals were not announced by the club but the length of Braun is reported to be of three years while Wingels is on for two and Desjardins was awarded one year.
All three players were set to become restricted free agents, which is why San Jose Sharks’ general manager, Doug Wilson, wanted to get the job done as soon as possible without any further delay.
"You take a look at the people we've added, and I think it's fairly consistent with the identity that we want to re-establish," said GM Wilson.
Braun is a 25-year-old defenseman who completed his second straight season with San Jose and is considered, by the team, to be a valuable resource on their other special teams that provide extensive defensive depth.
He put up 11 points (2 goals, 9 assists) in both with 28 games played in 2010-2011 and 66 appearances in 2011-2012.
Wingels and Desjardins are also coming out of the second straight season while the former had nine points (3 goals, 6 assists) in 33 games played last season and 17 points (4 goals, 13 assists) potted by the latter in 76 games.
Wilson also announced that the team would not be offering a qualifying tender to Benn Ferriero, who is reported to want to test the free agency.
"It ended up being a mutual thing," Wilson said. "He played hard for us, he just couldn't quite solidify a regular spot, and we have a lot of depth at the center position and right side."
Qualifying tenders were offered to forwards T.J Galiardi, Tim Kennedy, Brandon Mashinter, Frazer McLaren, Matt Pelech and James Sheppard. Defensemen, Matt Irwin and Nick Petrecki along with goalie, Alex Stalock, were also given the tenders.
Tony Lucia, James Marcou, Cameron MacIntyre and Tyson Sexsmith will also be testing the free agency along with Benn Ferriero.
More signings can be expected by the San Jose Sharks in the upcoming days as the free agency deadline comes closer.
