San Jose Sharks sign forward Logan Couture to two-year, $5.75 million contract –NHL offseason Update
San Jose Sharks did not take any time signing their fiery rookie, Logan Couture, as they came to an agreement with him on signing to a two-year contract extension, which is reported to be worth an estimated $5.75 million, on Friday, August 26.
After the end of next season, Couture was to finish off the third-year of his National Hockey League (NHL), three-year, entry-level contract and become a restricted free agent in July 2012, but instead of waiting until then, San Jose did not want to lose
the talented 22-year-old and instead, signed him much earlier.
San Jose Sharks' general manager, Doug Wilson, was all praises for the player in a statement he made about the player.
"Logan is an excellent teammate and he proved it by committing to the team-first philosophy that we have instilled here", San Jose general manager Doug Wilson said on the team's website. "Last season, as a rookie, he was a catalyst for our hockey club as
one of our most consistent players. Over the last two postseasons, he has been one of our most reliable players".
Couture was selected ninth overall during round-one of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by San Jose. Being a native from Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Couture began playing and was recognised mainly for his impressive performance with Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey
League (OHL).
In his last season before being picked up in the major league, Couture scored 87 points (39 goals, 48 assists) in 62 regular season games.
In his first season with San Jose, Couture participated in only 25 matchups and failed to find his game by scoring only nine points (5 goals, 4 assists) as he continued playing for their minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL), Worcester
Sharks.
Couture was especially ecstatic at the situation.
"I want to play in San Jose, I want to stay there and I want to win there. I was happy to get the deal done", Couture said.
Last season was certainly a remarkable one indeed for Logan Couture as he scored 56 points (32 goals, 24 assists) in 79 games. Next season will be a test for the young player as he looks to upkeep his performance.
