San Jose Sharks win fifth straight over New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime -NHL Match Update
San Jose continued its winning streak, extending it now to five in a row over the New York Islanders after Logan Couture made the equaliser in the second period and Brent Burns scored in overtime to win it, 3-2, on Saturday night, October 29, 2011, at the
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, United States.
New York Islanders on the other hand, lost their fifth straight contests after having won three straight in their first four competitions entering the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, which has disappointed team head coach, Jack Capuano.
"As hard as we worked, we didn't get the break at the end", Isles coach Jack Capuano said about not being able to maintain their lead or catch-up. "They have a tough job. If they didn't see it, they didn't see it. We went on the 4-on-3, we didn't execute
and they got the goal".
Joe Pavelski scored 17 seconds into the opening period during an early power play as New York’s, Steve Staios, was booked for cross checking with a minor only 10 seconds in.
The Islanders rebounded during the next 20 minutes as John Tavares and Michael Grabner took advantage of the only two power play opportunities of the period and put New York ahead, 2-1.
Surprisingly, Logan Couture’s goal at the 13:19 mark of second turned out to be crucial as both teams remained scoreless for the next 27 minutes and headed into an overtime extension.
To the Islanders dismay, Travis Hamonic, was forced to leave after being called for delaying the game only 29 seconds into overtime, allowing Brent Burns to score the game-winner 38 seconds later.
"It was a good hockey team that we played tonight -- one of the better teams in the League", Capuano said. "And I thought for three periods, we skated with them and did a lot of good things. That's what we have to take out of this game".
San Jose is eyeing their sixth straight win when they face-off against the New York Rangers on Monday while the Islanders host the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.
