San Jose Sharks wins 2-1 in overtime against Detroit Red Wings in game 1 – NHL playoffs
The first game of the Western Conference semi-final was hosted by San Jose Sharks at the HP Pavilion on Friday as they were up against Detroit Red Wings.
The Sharks used the home advantage to the maximum and won the game 2-1 in overtime after a hard-fought battle.
The game started on the slower side for both teams as they piled up shots regularly. Despite the early chances, neither of the teams was able to take advantage and score. However, the Red Wings successfully scored midway through the first period to get into
the lead. Both teams continued to pile shots on goal but the score line did not change. The Red Wings made a strong start to the second period but it was the Sharks who took charge after a few minutes following which they totally dominated the game. There
were numerous shots on goal but none of them found the back of the net and the period ended with the scores level.
The Sharks scored the lone goal in the final period that was pretty much even when it came to shots on goal to level the scores. The Sharks scored in overtime to win the game 2-1 in the end. Benn Ferriero, centre of the Sharks was named the star of the game
as he scored the winning goal of the game.
The game saw both teams reluctant to go on the attack at the start of the game. However, things got better with the passage of time as they successfully scored in the 10th minute through captain Nicklas Lidstrom from a powerful strike to get into
the lead.
The Sharks also came up with a couple of shots on goal but the period ended with the Red Wings leading 1-0 in the end. The Sharks made 9 shots on goal while the Red Wings made 8.
The second period kicked off with the Red Wings continuing to attack but they could not score. The Sharks were able to step up the pace and made quite a few shots on goal. The attacks intensified as the period came to an end.
There were no goals and the Red Wings led 1-0 at the end of the second period. The Red Wings made 9 shots on goal while the Sharks made double of those.
The Sharks came across a power play midway through the final period that proved to be productive for them. The goal was scored by Joe Pavelski from a powerful strike to level the scores. The period and regulation time ended with the scores level on 1-1 with
the Sharks making 12 shots on goal while the Red Wings made 7 of those.
The game went into overtime where the Sharks scored through Ben Ferriero from a well-placed flick shot in the 8th minute to win the game 2-1 and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
