San Jose Sharks’ young goalkeeper, Antti Niemi’s, sixth game effort not enough for San Jose Sharks - NHL
Antti Niemi, Sharks’ goalkeeper, gave it all that he had but couldn’t help Sharks from facing defeat at the Joe Louis Arena.
Niemi was absolutely superb as he came up with saves every now and then when Red Wings was on top and it looked as if they would score goals on each attack.
They were completely outplayed by Red Wings once again as they made 18 shots on goal compared to six by Sharks.
After the first two periods, the shots kept on increasing and the total tally went up to 32.
This didn’t bother Niemi as he continuously made saves to keep Sharks in a 1-0 lead in the game.
The sixth game wasn’t as lucky for Niemi since Wings finally scored to level the scores. The Red Wings kept on piling the pressure and scored two more goals to win game six and force the seventh game in the series.
The game will take place this Thursday at the HP Pavilion Center, home of the San Jose Sharks.
Niemi’s performance in the game was certainly one of the unique and brilliant performances in the Sharks team.
"He played super," Sharks captain Joe Thornton said. "He gave us a chance to win. We just couldn't win it, but it was just a fantastic performance."
The goalie came up with a superb performance in a game that saw the team completely down and under. He was able to make 42 saves during the game out of the 45 shots fired towards his goal.
Not only this, but he was also able to carry the team and keep them in the hunt after the first two periods during which Sharks was outshot by Red Wings, 32-13.
The performance by the goal keeper was one of which Sharks could have capitalized, if their offence had supported them.
However, this didn’t happen and Sharks had to face a defeat. It has harmed no one except itself as now the series is level on 3-3 and the winner of the next game will move into the Finals.
Considering the recent form, that has seen Red Wings high on confidence and registering three consecutive wins, one would certainly fancy their chances of winning the series.
This would write their names in history as they would become one of the unique teams to win a play-off series after being down by 3-0.
