I am considering living on a boat, like a 400 ft, affordably priced, less then 400k, I am just wondering if anyone knows the cost to keep the boat the fees for keeping it and living there, in san diego harbor or in coronado or if you know of any nice harbors in this area. also what are some costs when living on a boat such as electric, fuel, etc. (if you dont plan to travel with the yacht much) thanks a million! all information is helpful.

  1. First, I don't know of any 400 ft. Yachts, or commercial vessels that you can get for $400K.  The scrap value is more than that for decommissioned ships.  Secondly, San Diego harbors is one of the more expensive places to moor in the U.S.  I'm thinking commercial Pier here, $1200 a day......At a Marina, no way!!!!!!  Just to hook up to power for that size ship, your talking $150 a day, and I have no idea how much power  you'd use, but a 80' is using $450 a month.  So, If your bidding on an obsolete navel ship, like a frigate, your going to have a hard time finding a place to dock it, and then it's going to be more than most people can afford to keep up with routine cost.   A few years ago a guy had a mine sweeper on the Potomac river in D.C. he ended up abandoning it I think.  There a old Hospital ship in Baltimore harbor that a guy wanted to convert to a drug rehab center.  She's tied to a broken down pier, I think owned by the city.  It's been there for years, and the guy is asking for donations.   I think this is a bad idea!!!1

  2. The initial purchase is only the beginning of your financial hardships.

Slip rates can be 20$/ft and up. Many of the marinas are getting pretty s****. about the boats kept there and you have to keep your boat looking good... it's takes a LOT of work to have your boat continually looking good. Most marinas will charge a live aboard fee, as well.

I hear Chula Vista has a good marina or two that is more affordable and pretty nice.

Materials for boats are far more expensive than their residential counterparts, so be ready to fork out a shocking amount of money for the most basic repairs and upkeep.

Some people love it and some people wonder why the h**l they every bought a boat.

It depends on you and what you consider a good thing to dump all of your money into.
