Sanath Jayasuriya backs under Sri Lankan skipper – Cricket News Update
Former Sri Lankan opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TM-Dilshan-c2691 to come up with the goods after some below-par performances in the ongoing Test series against Pakistan.
The Lankans are currently trailing the Men In Green 1-0, after losing the second Test match by nine wickets, and are yet to register a win in the longer version since the retirement of spin wizard, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/M-Muralitharan-c1864.
After their final lost to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746.
Dilshan’s own performances has hindered as a result where he has failed to emulate his power-hitting in the earlier part of the year. He dropped to no.5 in the batting order, and although it did work initially, with the player stroking a notable half-century
against the Aussies, his return against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 has again raised doubts over his place in the side.
Jayasuriya, however, feels that the management needs to back the skipper for a longer period, and the team will soon get back to winning ways.
"Dilshan is an excellent choice as captain. He is still new to the responsibility. So what all Sri Lankans should do is not be putting him down. We should all support him and give him strength,” said Jayasuriya. “We should encourage him when he is failing.
Even his batting failure is only temporary. That is only to be expected with the added burden of captaincy.”
However, the 42-year-old has a wealth of experience from his playing days, having featured over 100 Test matches, while plying his trade in 445 ODIs and therefore feels that the team is simply going through a transitional period.
“I played cricket for the country for the past two decades. I have seen enough rough periods like this to know that there is nothing alarming, added Jayasuriya.
The Lankans will play the third and final Test match against Pakistan which starts from November 3, 2011, hoping to turn the corners and level the series.
