Having retired from Test cricket in 2007, the veteran Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain, Sanath Jayasuriya, is still keen to play competitive cricket as he awaits the forthcoming Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL).
The inaugural edition of the cash-rich league is going to commence on August 11, with the opening fixture between Nagenahira Nagas and Ruhuna Royals, at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
The former Lankan skipper has been bought by the Kandurata http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750
last week.
The franchise has the services of some other experienced captains like Misbah ul Haq and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/J-Botha-c1610. It remains to be seen who leads the team in Sangakkara’s absence.
The destructive left-hander is geared up for the tournament and thinks that it will provide a massive opportunity to the young players to showcase their talent. Playing alongside a number of international stars, the former Lankan captain is of the view that
the youngsters will enhance their skills.
“It's the first edition of the tournament, and I really can't wait for it to start. The SLPL will give a lot of local players a chance to play with international cricketers,” Jayasuriya said. “That's a wonderful thing. Some of these cricketers would otherwise
never have had the chance to play against the top international players.”
With more than 20 thousand runs at the ultimate level of the sport and 440 international scalps, the all-rounder is one of the greatest players produced by the Island.
While talking about the expected quality of cricket in the tournament, the former Sri Lankan captain believes that there are a number of brilliant players in the country. The left-handed opener is optimistic that SLPL will give a boost to the Island’s cricket.
“Even though we are a very small country, the system is such that we produce a lot of cricketers. The schools, club cricket and provincial cricket - they are all very strong. Now with the SLPL, we will produce even more cricketers,” he added.
