http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ST-Jayasuriya-c2567 wants Thilina Kandamby in the ODI squad – Cricket News Update
The former Sri Lankan captain, Sanath Jayasuriya, has urged selectors to include the left-handed middle-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SHT-Kandamby-c2522, in the One Day International (ODI) squad, and wants the selectors to ignore the tried and tested
failures.
The 30-year-old cricketer has been an exceptional performer in the country’s domestic cricket over the years. The middle-order batsman made his international debut in 2004 but has struggled to cement his place in the national team
till date.
The left-hander has so far played 38 ODIs for the Islanders, having scored 870 runs at an average of 30 runs per innings, with the help of five half-centuries. His stats need some improvement but there is no question about the player’s
ability.
While backing the cricketer from Colombo, Jayasuriya slammed the national selectors for persisting with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CK-Kapugedera-c1269, who has failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities.
“I feel a person like Thilina Kandamby should be in this ODI squad. I am not against any player, but someone like (Chamara) Kapugedera, he has been given many chances but he has not proved himself, and yet he keeps getting chances,”
the former captain said.
Quite surprisingly, the Lankan authorities keep showing confidence on the right-handed batsman, although he averages merely 22.23 runs per innings after 91 encounters. The 25-year-old was also handed the Test cap but he could not
impress.
The former Islanders’ skipper is of the view that there are a number of budding cricketers in the country and it is highly unfair to ignore the players who have been doing brilliantly at the domestic level.
Jayasuriya mentioned, “From that point of view, I am very disappointed with the selectors. There are players who have been performing, and they are not being given a chance. The selectors have to be responsible, they should pick the
right players.”
The former left-handed opener is all set to play the inaugural edition of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779. The 43-year-old retired
from Test cricket in 2007 and called it a day from the shorter formats last year.
