Sand is bad for Leopard Geckos if they accidentally digest it while trying to snatch their food, but can a baby Leopard Gecko live on sand if you feed them in a different tank and then when their done eating put them back into their original tank?

  1. i wouldent risk it just use reptile carpet thats what i use

  2. no becouse they tend to l**k things rocks, walls, your hand SAND etc

so even though they might not be getting as much as if they where eating in the sand it still can be enough to cause impaction and trust me that is not good....would you like to have your intestines rip open? i think not. dont risk it.

  3. There is controversy around every type of substrate. A lot of reptile owners don't use reptile carpet because the fibers can be ingested or the fibers may wrap around digits and cut off circulation.

Feeding in a separate container is a very good idea, but geckos like to l**k the substrate. But certain types of sand are better than others. There are kinds made with calcium that are easier to digest.

  4. They can eat the sand because mine does and it is just fine. don't change anything just feed it in the same tank.because I called petco and some dumb ex-employee isn't gonna tell me about lizards, so some lizards eat too much and some only eat a little and some eat none when being fed so don't listen to employees who got fired and are trying to convince you that i'm wrong! So it's okay!So I wouldn't worry just don't listen to ex employees that make up lies to ruin the business. So don't worry about it if your gecko is going to the bathroom, eating, drinking, and moving around than it's fine.Oh and the person who tryed to convince me was saucy.

  5. okay I did what I think other have not. I picked up a book on Leopard Geckos read it and it has helped me out. Now sand to me I don't think sand will really hurt Geckos, where are leopard geckos originally from? the desert so I don't see how sand can really kill the gecko if it eats it a lot of people have worried this and thats why they don't use sand. Here is a reading from the book and this is true info not from the internet. An inch of sand, fine-grained sand may also provide an additional source of minerals (calcium.) Leopard Geckos will only eat the sand if there is not enough food for him thats why some die because they eat too much of it and it causes gut impaction. The book also say this adding  a cup or so of fine coral, which is mostly calcium carbonate, per 5 pound of silica sand. Mix the two evenly. When your gecko feels like taking a chomp out of its sand it will get some calcium. So my input provide the right amount of food for the gecko and I don't think he'll have problems living in the sand.
