Sandburg makes it to quarter-finals by beating Marist 2-0: High School Volleyball news
Sandburg’s boys volleyball team has earned itself a ticket to advance into the quarter-finals of the Sandburg Sectional by winning against Marist on Tuesday. Sandbur was able to defeat Marist by 2-0 in the first round of the tournament.
The first set of the match was intense with Marist giving some tough competition to Sandburg. However, the loss of the first set seemed to have taken the heart out of Marist as they gave the second set away quite easily.
Sandburg will be competing in the Elite Eight against New Trier on Friday. Sandburg has a solid overall season record of 36 wins earned at the expense of experiencing three defeats. This will help Sandburg enter the courts at Hoffman Estates High School
with the right attitude.
As Sandburg is making preparations for the upcoming quarter-final match, Marist is heading back home with an overall season record showing 33 wins at the cost of incurring six losses.
Sean Airola, the head coach of Sandburg, spoke about the teams after the match and said, “It doesn’t matter how much talent they have or how much we have. We’re going to give each other our best. Marist fought. That’s what they do.”
The start of the first set of the match saw both Sandburg and Marist lock horns in an intense struggle. The initial part of the game went back and forth between the two teams in a thrilling display of volleyball. The score was still tied when the set reached
it middle at 17-17. After that point, the Eagles were able to push ahead by going on a 4-0 run and taking the lead for themselves. However, Marist did not let them go too far and kept in hot pursuit. With Sandburg in the lead at 24-23, the Eagles were able
to earn themselves the final point and win the match at 25-23.
After losing the first set of the game with such a close call, Marist seemed to lose motivation, which showed in the way they started off the second set of the match. After the first service, the momentum shifted completely in favour of the Eagles who were
able to take advantage and secure themselves a lead early on at 8-1. From that point on, Marist was never able to be in a leading position again as the Eagles soared all the way to a second and final set victory at 25-16.
The Sandburg victory was the result of some good team-work but some player had exceptional performances. Prominent among the Eagles was Andrew Muys, who was able to post a total of eight kills for his team. He also contributed by adding three blocks.
