Sandeep Singh, Sardara Singh free to represent India’s national hockey team – Hockey News
In order to provide a further edge in the ongoing efforts to promote the national sport, Hockey India has annulled their earlier decision which put a two-year ban on two legendary Indian players Sandeep Singh and Sardara Singh over the charges of misconduct
and violation of the rules.
The governing body took the decision unwillingly, as it was not the first attempt of violation done by the two players. The pair of repeat offenders though got permission to join the national training camp. However, the final call for their comeback into
the national squad will be finalised by Chief Coach Michael Nobbs. In view of the preparations of the national side for the qualifying round of the Olympics, it will be an important development.
The two players, Sardara Singh and Sandeep Singh made unconditional excuses for their violation when they appeared before the probe panel of Hockey India. Sandeep while speaking to the media stated that they have submitted their apology in written form in
which they asked the authorities concerned to put a life-time ban on them if they were found guilty in the future. He further said, “It was one of the worst phases of my career which thankfully has passed. Now my only focus will be my game,” he said. “We (I
and Sardar) will be joining the national camp tomorrow. I am now determined to do well for India in the upcoming international tournaments.”
Anupam Ghulati, Executive Director of HI informed that they took the decision after making a detailed a review in the best interests of the country as well as the sport. He further commented that it will be the final chance for the two players and earlier
announced that the two-year ban will be put into effect if similar practice was done in future. He clarified that there would be no option for appeal and apology in case of repetition of the violation. All these things have been communicated to both players.
Sardara Singh and Sandeep Singh were banned a day before the team was heading to China for taking part in the first Asian Champions Trophy. The two reportedly skipped the camp without getting permission from any higher authority citing personal reasons.
A probe committee of Hockey India barred them for taking part in any international event representing India.
