  1. Sandon Half Tide Dock is a half tide dock on the River Mersey, England and part of the Port of Liverpool. It is situated in the northern dock system, connected to Huskisson Dock to the north, Wellington Dock to the east and Bramley-Moore Dock to the south. Sandon Dock was situated to the north of Wellington Dock and was accessible via Sandon Half Tide Dock.

Opened in 1851, the site was originally part of both Sandon Dock and Wellington Half Tide Dock, which connected directly to the Mersey via a narrow lock entrance. At the turn of the twentieth century, Sandon Dock was redeveloped and an enlarged half tide dock created, with two larger locks built either side of the original entrance. When these access channels were sealed in March 1977, the water quality in the dock was noted to have improved.

Between 18 and 21 July 2008, larger vessels participating in the 2008 Tall Ships' Race will be berthed in the dock.

  2. A comprehensive answer from Neil as per usual!

The only thing I can add is that if you're asking because you want to go and see the Tall Ships over the next few days, don't even think of driving!

    See http://www.tallshipsliverpool.co.uk/gett...

Assuming the roads aren't actually jammed with traffic, there'll be nowhere to park anyway.

Park-and-Ride schemes are set up but they are miles out - Aintree Racecourse, Speke Airport and Hooton Aerodrome near Ellesmere Port!

If I were you I'd get the train, Sandhills Station (Merseyrail Northern Line - see http://www.merseytravel.gov.uk/images/ra...  )  is a short walk from the Sandon Dock

The Ordnance Survey map reference for the Dock itself is  SJ333927

  3. The Sandon Half tide dock is part of the North Liverpool dock network, and is home to the North West water treatment works for sewage from Manchester which until a few years ago they kindly used to dump in the mouth of the River Mersey.

If you head north on the Dock Road from the Pier Head (its proper name is Regent Road) cross the bridge at the Old Tobacco warehouse at the Stanley Dock, where the Leeds-Liverpool canal starts, the Sandon Dock is s few hundred yards further on opposite a pub called The Sandon (funnily enough). Just look out for the signs for North West Water.

Edit- I forgot the bridge at Stanley Dock on Regent Rd is closed for repairs you will have to follow the diversion to get around it.
