Sandown clerks not sure of Saturday’s card
The curators and clerks of Sandown horseracing course are not sure whether they will be able to host the fixtures for Saturday, February 4 or not, as there is enough frost on the ground due to falling temperatures.
There are 7 races scheduled at Sandown on the weekend from 1:25 to 4:40. These events include:
1: Betfred "Double Delight" Contenders Hurdle (Listed Race) Cl1 2m110y
2: Betfred "When Both Teams Score" Handicap Chase Cl2 2m CH4
3: Betfred Goals Galore Challengers Novices´ Chase (Registered As Scilly Isles Novices´ Chase) Grade 1 Cl1 2m4f110y CH4
4: Betfred And Levy Board Heroes Handicap Hurdle Grade 3 Cl1 2m6f CH4
5: Betfred Masters Handicap Chase Cl2 3m110y CH4
6: Betfred "Hat Trick Heaven" Juvenile Hurdle Cl4 2m110y
7: Betfred Bonus King Bingo Novices´ Handicap Hurdle Cl4 2m4f
In a bid to save the course from moisture, the clerks have covered the entire take-offs and landings, but this formula is not going to work as the temperature is falling continuously, and it is likely to fall further down tomorrow.
It will be hard for the horses to run on the wet course on Saturday. However, the venue managers have not taken any decision in this regard. They are planning to uncover the track at the day of the races, and then decide about the fixtures according
to the situation.
Sandown director of racing, Andrew Cooper, said, “We are absolutely fine at the moment. We haven't had a particularly cold night yet, but we expect it to be cold on Thursday and Friday night. We have been told to expect minus 4C air temperatures throughout
Thursday and Friday night.”
He added, “It wouldn't be sensible to call an inspection just yet, so we are very much reliant on what happens during the next few nights. The whole track has been covered since Monday and we have done as much as we possibly can.”
Freezing cold coupled with caustic snow falling have badly hampered routine activities across Europe. The horseracing events are also getting affected by the calamities. Yesterday, some fixtures at the Ludlow course had to be delayed due to excessive
dampness.
