Question:

Sandpaper perch? Yes? No?

Would a sandpaper perch be a good idea? This isn't the same as those mildly expensive sanding perches you can get at a pet store or something. These are those perch covers made of sandpaper. Is this alright? I heard they're NOT recommended, but I have it... is this a good idea?

  1. Sand paper perch covers are too rough *and* they slip around on the perch making your bird unable to really get a good grip without gripping harder than it normally would.  Sand paper perches cause foot sores.

You can purchase a "sandy perch" which has sand embedded in it, or you can purchase a concrete perch.  Both are considered "grooming" perches and as long as your bird has other perches in his cage, they are perfectly fine.

The best way to keep birds' nails groomed is to offer a variety of perches in different materials and thicknesses, simulating the birds' natural environments.  This also promotes healthy feet that are less prone to arthritis as the birds get older.
