Sandra Gal grabs third spot in US Women's Open 2012
German Sandra Gal, who has been looking to rack up her second LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) title since becoming pro in 2007, posted an overall 289 in the US Women’s Open 2012 to finish third
on the leaderboard.
The tournament, held at Blackwolf Run, Kohler, featured most of the top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars. However, Gal appeared to be in high spirits and did her best this time.
She shot a 74 in the final round and kept most of her rivals at bay. Although her third-round score was not surprisingly good, she managed to pile up a big lead on several LPGA contenders.
She kicked off the fourth round with plenty of confidence, but faltered when her shot went off course and she ended up scoring a bogey on the first hole. She was quick to regain her composure as she drained
a birdie-putt on the second hole.
Gal then parred the next six holes and kept on the safe side. She not only had to face battle-hardened contenders like Shanshan Feng and Cristie Kerr, but also sweltering heat that made it difficult for players
to do their best.
Yet, the German star remained strong on most of the holes and avoided making too many lapses.
Gal spoke to the media at the end of the concluding round, saying she was more than happy that she came close to beating the leader Na Yeon Choi of South Korea and Amy Yang.
The 27-year-old golfer said that she faced trouble adjusting to the unfavourable weather conditions, but improved her game after the opening round.
“Well, I think just leading up to this event my game started to get a lot better and more solid, and I think the key to it -- I'll probably keep that to myself. I think it's just less thinking and more playing
and really enjoying out there,” Gal said.
Speaking of her game plan, the German prodigy said that she was pretty confident that the only thing that would help her perform well was putting. She pointed out that her putting has improved greatly in recent
months.
“My putting. I think what really turned it around was my putting. I did change putters last week to a Metal X Callaway putter, and I started rolling it really nicely with it and I think that really, really
helped me this week”.
