Sandra Gal improves position in second round of CME Group Titleholders 2012
German Sandra Gal made a charge in the second round of CME Group Titleholders as she fired a 68 to take the share of seventh position along with two other contenders.
Gal got off to a good start at the four-day tournament, being staged at The TwinEagles Club, Naples, Florida, but shooting a 70 failed to place her inside the top 10.
However, the German star picked up pace in the second round and managed to shoot a 68, which caused her to jump from a tie-16
to a tie-7—a considerable gain.
Gal faced a stiff competition on Friday, with stars like Japanese Ai Miyazato shooting a 64 to snatch the solo lead. But her body language showed that she is ready to take on rivals in the
next two rounds with a more aggressive game.
Gal started the round in a jittery style as she failed to judge the ball well on the par-5 second hole, carding a bogey. She then parred the rest of the holes on the front nine, bringing her
score to a 37.
However, she reversed the situation on the back nine, with the help of four birdies and one eagle. Although fired up due to solid strokes on most of the holes on the back nine, she fumbled
on the par-4 15th and ended up registering her second bogey of the round.
French Karine Icher, another underdog of the star-spangled event, also made a surprise comeback in the tournament in the second round.
Icher was happy after shooting a 67 on Thursday, but slumping performance from most of the first-round gainers helped her rise to a tie for third position on Friday.
The French star made several good strokes, but an eagle on the par-5 5th did the trick.
Speaking to the media about her second-round performance, Icher said that she was not so hopeful after making a sluggish start, but a much-needed eagle rescued her and kept in her contention
till the final moment of the round.
She said: “(The eagle) gave me back on track and then I had a few good putts, so good round, yeah”. The young gun further said that she liked the course very much.
