Sandra Gal remains winless, but high in spirit
German Sandra Gal has been seeking to end her victory drought since she racked up her last title at the Kia Classic in March 2011, but her latest performance at the CME Group Titleholders
2012 was something to be proud of.
Although Gal was not able to win the season-ending tournament, played at The TwinEagles Club, Naples, Florida, she displayed a much better performance than before, posting an overall 283 to
finish tied for the 14th position.
Gal is one of the rising LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders in Europe, but her biggest concern has been to win a major victory in order to become the best in the region.
Gal took part in the CME Group Titleholders 2012 with her head held high as she had vowed to grab this last opportunity for a title in the season.
The German star got off to sensible start as she carded a 70 in the first round. Other key players who grabbed attention in the first round included Suzann Pettersen.
Pettersen shot a 66 on Thursday to grab an early lead along with two other players. However, the Norwegian golfer lost her grip on the match and slipped to a much lower position on the leaderboard.
Gal started her last round with full confidence as she fired a birdie on the first hole. She then parred the next three holes and ended up carding a bogey on the par-5 5th.
On the back nine, her performance remained almost the same as she carded one birdie and one bogey.
South Korean So Yeon Ryu displayed a superb performance as she carded an overall 276 to take the second position on the leaderboard.
She remained in contention right from the start of the tournament, having shot a 66 in the opening round to share the lead.
Speaking to the media at the end of the tournament, Ryu said that she was happy to play with big names, as it gave her plenty of confidence.
“Especially I always happy to play with Inbee and Jessica, especially Jessica is really exciting player, so really happy playing with them,” said Ryu who has grabbed a total of two LPGA victories
in her pro career.
