Sandra Gal rises to 29th in world rankings
German Sandra Gal, who displayed a stunning performance in the US Women’s Open 2012 and finished third on the leaderboard, has surged to the 29th position in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Gal has been a prominent player on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association), and her good performance in the US Women’s Open 2012 is said to be the main reason behind her improved ranking.
Gal kicked off the third major tournament of the current season in an amazing style, as she scored an overall 289. She not only had to face formidable contenders, but also rough weather that took a toll on players’ performance.
The German star appeared to be in high spirits and made balanced strokes on most of the holes.
The tournament played at Kohler featured a tough field that included strong contenders such as current world number one Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer, Suzann Pettersen, Mika Miyazato, Cristie Kerr, Nicole Castrale, Shanshan Feng, Amy Yang and Na Yeon Choi.
Gal came close to beating the leader of the tournament, South Korean Choi, but a few mistakes in the third and fourth round hampered her from advancing.
Analysts said that the golfing sensation will now have to take her game more seriously, as plenty of other players have emerged as a growing threat.
Speaking to the media about her stunning performance in the 2012 edition of the US Open, Gal said that she is happy with what she did at Kohler. She said that her swing has got a lot better recently, as she has been training hard on the practice range.
Speaking of her putting that has been a little troublesome for her in the past few tournaments, LPGA giant said that she managed to fix some fatal flaws in her strokes and now she is able to adjust to difficult conditions on the course.
When asked how she felt after losing to Choi in the final round, Gal said that she fought hard but could not maintain her momentum in the final moments.
“I mean it was a bit frustrating because it was hard to catch up with her unless she had a really bad day, which I'm not hoping for anyone,” she said.
