Sandwich Question?

As the matron of honor in an upcoming wedding, I (along with the other bridesmaids) are throwing the shower at my house. I want to do some type of sanwiches, along with salads, pasteries, etc. What is the cheapest/easiest way to provide sandwiches for 50 women?

  1. get pinwheel sandwiches, some fresh fruit, and chips.

  2. I would suggest making some really huge sandwiches, and place them on platters with bread knives, so that people can serve themselves. I buy Italian bread, and make two parallel slits along the top, and then cut out a "u" shape at each end (like a smiley face) to connect the slits. Then, you can lift off the top (it looks like a canoe), to fill it with cheese, meat, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Once you have all the toppings you want, you just place the top back on it, and slice.  You can make a veggie one with avocado, red pepper, sprouts, and mushrooms, a turkey one, ham and cheese, roast beef, BLT with cucumber, tuna, Caprese (sliced mozzarella, pesto or fresh basil, sun-dried tomato, fresh tomato, and spinach), and any other kind you think your guests would like.

You could pre-slice the sandwiches, but then serve them so that each larger loaf is still presented as one.

A nice salad that is very simple to make is celery, green apple, and toasted walnuts with honey mustard vinaigrette. Use one large bunch of celery, including the leaves, and two or three thinly sliced green apples. Add some chopped toasted walnuts, and a dressing that is just about equal parts honey, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice, tinkering with the proportions to suit your own tastes. Add a little oil, if you feel it is necessary. The lemon juice in the dressing keeps the apple from turning color. The nice thing about this salad is that it has no lettuce, which you will probably have on most of your sandwiches already, and want won't to serve too much more of.

  3. Caterers always charge more for hors d'ouerves (sp?) than for plates of food because all those fussy little finger foods take an awfully long time to make.

Are you talking about lunch-type sandwiches?  Consider having a buffet laid out with many ingredients/condiments and let guests go along both sides of your buffet and make their own sandwiches.

Cold salads as side dishes are nice, too.  If you make pastry, you know it's time-consuming.

If the shower's going to be in the heat of summer, consider sorbet for dessert.  You can rent sorbet cups and any other glassware you'll need for a day, then wash and return. Simple and elegant.

  4. I'd get platters at the Grocery store & salads too...

  5. Either finger sandwiches

or Italian sandwich on big roll made from the directions of the Pampered Chef using the stone to cook the bread into the circle ( google it, sorry I wasn't more help)

  6. Take tea sandwiches... like cuccumber, dill and sour cream, egg salad, tuna salad, salmon and cuccumber.  Cut the crusts off the square bread, make the sanwiches and cut then in quarters.

Also, serve mimi pastries, mini muffins with coffee and tea.

  7. tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, ham salad served with mini rolls.  Or a meat and cheese platter with mini rolls.  You can either order both platters from the deli at your local grocery store or you can make them yourself.

  8. non-cut loaves or big baguette sticks are probably the most economic if you are looking to cut costs, but they would take longer to make.

just do a variety, but dont overdo it, and dont worry if the sandwiches are all used up-you dont want loads left over. to save money and time dont overfill the sandwiches-keep the fillings to normal portions.

just make sure you have a variety of fillings, and if you buy lots of bread look out for special offers at supermarkets.

    have fun and good luck!

  9. get some strippers, ice cream, whip cream and cherries and use your imagination
