Sandy Alderson content with work done in Baseball Winter Meetings - MLB Update
General Manager for the New York Mets, Sandy Alderson is fairly satisfied with the work done in Baseball Winter Meetings. As the meetings conclude, questions are being asked as to what the team has accomplished during the last week.
Apart from formally announcing contract extension of David Wright, there was hardly any big news that came off from Nashville about the Mets. Yet, the GM feels he has been successful to some extent in addressing issues with the roster.
Ironically, the issue of contract renewal of R.A. Dickey remains undecided about by the club. Despite the negotiations are underway ever since the beginning of the offseason, no significant headway has come off as yet.
Indeed if Dickey departs the Mets, their preparations for the 2013 Major League season will be affected badly.
Dickey was the only pitcher who stepped up and won games for the team in the last season. If he is not present next year, it will be hard to find his replacement for the Mets.
Other than Dickey, the Mets can have an outfielder and a regular catcher missing from their roster for the upcoming expedition.
Unable to spend a huge amount of money in the market, the whole of Winter Meetings did not see them making any attempt to fill vacant spots on the roster.
There are many reasons to believe complacency the GM is showing right now defies the ground realities. He is perhaps forgetting the pressing requirement of an outfielder and someone who can solidify their offence.
The reason why the Mets struggled during the 2012 season was their below par offence.
Unfortunately so far it seems the Mets will continue going with the same offence that caused their downfall in the last season, which also means improvements cannot be expected.
Alderson believes he has come close to resolving a number of matters which were at their initial stage at the beginning of the meetings.
"It’s always nice to see something tangible at the end of the meetings," Alderson said. "But we feel we’ve made solid progress on a number of fronts."
To what extent satisfaction demonstrated by Alderson is true depends on the kind of performance his team puts up next year.
That is the criteria the fans will have as they evaluate performance of their General Manager.
