Sandy Alomar Jr. prepping for interview with Cubs
On Wednesday Mike Maddux was interviewed by the Chicago Cubs for the managerial position open at the helm. On Friday, Sandy Alomar Jr. will get the call. The former Major League Baseball catcher has been the Cleveland Indians Bench Coach and was formerly
their first base coach. The 45 – year – old has been impressive since he took up his role as a coach and instructor. He talked to the press about his upcoming interview on Thursday, November 10.
The former catcher told the press he was looking forward to his session with the Cubs’ President of Baseball Operations, Theo Epstein and General Manager Jed Hoyer. The six time All – Star player has immense experience from his playing days. He has worked
under nine different managers in his 20 seasons’ career. Six of his nine skippers reached the World Series.
"I have learned a tremendous amount of baseball from those kind of people and my father has been very influential in my career in the coaching department," he said of Sandy Alomar Sr. "I feel like I can help an organization."
Alomar’s father was a coach for the Cubs between 2000 and 2002, under manager Don Baylor. That would enforce a positive a look on his credentials. Sandy Alomar Jr. had always contemplated coaching and managing a team after his career as a player, ended.
He kicked off his post player career as a catching instructor and a bullpen coach for the New York Mets. He then moved on to the Indians. There, he started instructing on catching. Then he moved on to first base coaching and now he is the bench coach.
"The only weakness that I have, to be honest with you right now, is that I haven't managed anywhere in the past," Alomar said. "That's the main concern for everybody. But I've managed myself, and I've managed people throughout my career with leadership,
and I feel like I could do it."
Alomar’s brother, Roberto, was inducted in to the Hall of Fame, this year. His brother played a huge part in the Toronto Blue Jays’ bid for fame. Sandy Alomar Jr. will be trying to do the same if the Cubs hire him as their new manager.
