Sandy Lyle wishes to become the European Ryder Cup team captain – Golf News
Two-time major winner, Sandy Lyle from Scotland, along with four other players, was added to the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, May 7, 2012.
Lyle has immense achievements in his career, including 30 professional victories in different continents of the world.
Of the total wins, he recorded 18 on the European Tour and six on the PGA Tour. He also recorded one each on the Japan Golf Tour and European Seniors Tour.
In addition to that, he was one of the elite players on the European Tour in the 1970s and 1980s. In between 1986 and 1989, he remained in the top-10 world rankings for over 167 weeks.
He also represented the European team in five Ryder Cup editions from 1979 to 1987. Yet, there is something missing in his profile, and that is European team Captaincy in the Ryder Cup.
"Yes, it would be nice to be a Ryder Cup captain," Lyle said Monday on ’Morning Drive‘, continuing, "but there have been a lot of good men who have been overlooked or just weren't there at the right time. I could be one of those".
In 2009, he got a chance to become the European team captain for the first time in his career when he accused Colin Montgomerie of cheating during the British Open in the same year.
According to Lyle, even if the matter was overlooked at that time, his time was over, and he has very few opportunities left to be considered for the position.
Golf commentators believe that he did not get the position because of the fact that he was not close to the players selected for the team in the 2010 edition of the tournament.
Therefore, Montgomerie was selected as the captain, eventually leading the team to a victory.
"There's obviously quite a few players at the age of 40, 45, that are standing at the side waiting for the Ryder Cup captaincy," said the 54-year-old.
"As I get older, it's going to be harder because I'm a little bit disconnected away from the European Tour".
Despite this, Lyle has never lost hope, as he said:
“You never say no in this game”.
