Sangakkara ton powers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 to a comfortable position
Resilient Sangakkara anchored his team to a decent position by tea at the second day of the Test against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760. In doing so, the Sri Lankan captain engineered his 24th Test century in a mechanical way, considering the indifferent conditions
in which the left hander started his batting.
In the 2nd session of play, the home team added a massive 95 runs in twenty overs. In between, the hosts lost two wickets in the middle overs.
Thilan Samaraweera and Kumar Sangakkara added 165 runs for the fourth wicket partnership. As a result, the duo steered their team in a comfortable position as Sri Lanka racked up 294/5 by tea.
The highlight of the innings has been Kumar’s breathtaking century. In his defying knock, the Sri Lankan willower mixed attack with defense as he made the opposition attack to toil hard. In the process, the left hander remained unbeaten on 132 runs, including
sixteen crisp boundaries and a huge six.
Moreover, he started his innings in trying conditions, where the West Indian pace attack was seaming and swinging the ball in gloomy conditions. Initially he played the ball late and watchfully as he jogged for his runs. As his innings progressed, he looked
mature at the crease by collecting runs in a measured way.
Samaraweera provided his captain with valuable support by scoring 84 runs in a composed manner. The right hand batsman joined his skipper on a bleak score-line of 36/3. For a start, the 34-year old looked more at ease than his senior partner in dire circumstances.
Angelo Mathews worked hard for his 25 runs as the opposition seam bowlers attacked him with their persistent line and length with the ball.
The Sri Lankan batsmen got the better of the West Indian spinners. The spin twins for the visitors have struggled in the match as they provided the opposition batsmen with too many short and wide deliveries.
Apart from the spinners, the seam bowling has been brilliant. Each of the two wickets fell to the quick bowlers. Dwayne Bravo, who was struggling in the first spell, found a certain length to trouble the batsmen on this wicket.
Furthermore, Bravo accounted for the wicket of Samaraweera as he broke the resilient 165-run stand between the 34-year old and his skipper.
Kemar Roach has been the star of the show for his team as he has troubled the opponents with his probing seam bowling. The right-arm seamer added one more wicket to his tally by dismissing Mathews with a beautiful out-swinger. The delivery landed on around
the off-stump, moved away off the seam to take the batsman’s outside edge away to the keeper, where Baugh gathered a simple catch.
