Sania Mirza, Vania King and Sofia Arvidsson make it to the second round of the Family Circle Cup
Sania Mirza undoes Alison Riske in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 6-3
Indian tennis pro and qualifier Sania Mirza managed to oust American player and World Number 118 Alison Riske in three sets in the first round of the Family Circle Cup, defeating the player despite losing the first set. She won the match with a scoreline
of 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in a little over two hours and three minutes.
Mirza, currently ranked World Number 90, played a mediocre game despite the fact that she won the match. The player scored just two aces and committed seven double faults, while Riske played a safer game and scored four aces with just one double fault. However,
she was also broken five times and could not convert four of seven break points against Mirza. The Indian pro won the match with eleven more points than her opponent.
Mirza will now compete against Vania King of USA in the second round of the tournament.
Vania King upsets Vera Dushevina 6-4, 7-6(7)
American tennis player Vania King defeated Russian pro Vera Dushevina in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(7) in her opening match at the 2011 Family Circle Cup, surprising viewers by upsetting the higher-ranked player in a little over an hour and three minutes.
King is primarily a doubles player, but is ranked World Number 109 in the WTA Singles division. Dushevina is currently ranked World Number 51 and was expected to win the match, but squandered break point opportunities and could not convert four of eight
break points against King. At the same time, King managed to break Dushevina five times out of seven opportunities. She concluded the match with a victory by winning three points more than her opponent.
Vania King will take on qualifier and Indian tennis pro Sania Mirza in the second round of this tournament.
Sofia Arvidsson manages a three-set victory over Alize Cornet 6-4, 2-6, 6-3
Swedish tennis player Sofia Arvidsson scored a victory over Alize Cornet of France, defeating the player in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. She took a little over two hours and six minutes to achieve this win.
Arvidsson is currently ranked World Number 84, while Cornet is slightly higher at Number 67. Arvidsson fumbled on occasion during the match, but managed to keep a grip over the situation and committed just one double fault. She also managed to break her
French opponent five times during the match, and concluded the contest by winning three points more than her opponent.
Cornet will now take on Israeli fifth seed Shahar Peer in the second round of the 2011 Family Circle Cup.
