Fourth seeds, India’s Sania Mirza and Russia’s Elena Vesnina hit back after a set down to win against Spanish duo of Nuria Llagostera Vives and Arantxa Parra Santonja in a three setter match at Women’s Doubles – Wimbledon Championships
2011, a major grass court tournament held from 20thJune to 3rd July in London, England. They registered a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over the Spaniards to advance into the semi-finals on Wednesday.
The Indo Russian pair encountered a hard fought duel against the giant smashing Spanish combo who was leading a set but later fell to the higher ranked pair in a troublesome three setter match at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet
Club.
The Spaniards made quick in-roads at Court Twelve as they capitalised on the early breakpoint opportunities founded and prevailed throughout the set to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Mirza and Vesnina re-connected themselves in the second set as they plucked entire serves by rolling the balls expertly onto the lines. The pair then converted breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to seal the equaliser with
a 6-4 score line.
The Indo Russian tandem kept momentum rolling in the final set as they exchanged early breaks and held on to their serves till 5-5. They then converted another breakpoint opportunity to their advantage in the end to bag the decider
with a 7-5 win.
Mirza and Vesnina joined forces in February and their combination was amazing as they won the titles at Indian Wells and Charleston. The pair then reached the title round at French Open and is aiming to win their first Grand Slam
together at Wimbledon.
Up next for the winning combination of Mirza and Vesnina are the winner of the match between eight seeded Chinese Shuai Peng and Jie Zheng and second seeds, Czech Kveta Peschke and Slovene Katarina Srebotnik.
Lucky losers, New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic and Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn who stunned third seeded Americans, Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond in a tough three set battle.
Erakovic and Tanasugarn were trailing a set went they made an epic comeback to register a 4-6, 7-6(1), 13-11 victory on Court Eighteen.
The Lucky one played head to head in the second set and dragged it to a tie-breaker. They dominated all over the court to equalise the sets with a 7-6(1) score line.
The New Zealand Thai tandem carried their winning ways into the final set and after a lengthy period of time, they clinched the decider with a 13-11 win.
Up next for unseeded semi-finalists are the winner of the match between sixth seeds, Russian Nadia Petrova and Australian Anastasia Rodionova and unseeded pair of German Sabine Lisicki and Australian Samantha Stosur.
