Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina breezes in Family Circle Cup
The Indo – Russian pair of Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina upset the second seeded American pair of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond in straight sets to advance into second round at the 2011 Family Circle Cup on Wednesday.
The winning combination of the Indian and the Russian team has reached far in the doubles events at the few tournaments they entered. They displayed tremendous skills earlier this season and clinched the Women’s Doubles title
at 2011 BNP Paribas Open without losing a set throughout the tournament. The winning team destroyed the American pair of Bethanie Mattek Sands and Meghann Shaughnessy with a bagel in final.
Mirza and Vesnina carried their winning momentum in this tournament and trashed the seeded Americans by a 6-3, 6-4 win at the Family Circle Tennis Center at Charleston. In the opening set, they smacked three aces, had a much better
first serve share of 83 percent and earned a convincing 50 percent win on it. Though the Indo-Russian team lost their serves twice but with their awesome co-ordination, they converted all the four breakpoints they found to their advantage.
The Indian Russian duo carried their winning ways into the second and held their opening serve spectacularly. Later, they just lost their serve once but they broke their rival’s serve two times to seal the final set with a 6-4
win. Mirza – Vesnina displayed their exceptional skills to earn a higher first serve share of 81 percent as opposed to their opponent’s 72 percent and they registered an acceptable 64 percent win on it. They also hammered two aces and found eight breakpoint
opportunities.
The Indo Russian duo will next face Russian – Australian pair of Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova who downed the wild card enterers, American Shelby Rogers and Swiss Patty Shnyder in a three set thriller.
The Russian Australian tandem registered an impressive 80 percent win on their lower first serve share and converted four out of eight breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to win the match with a 6-4, (8)6-7, 10-6 score
line.
The top seeds, Czech Kveta Peschke and Slovene Katarina Srebotnik also advanced to the second round on another court. They trashed their unseeded opponents, Russian Vera Dushevina and Belarusian Tatiana Poutchek, with double breadsticks.
Both seeds produced a similar first serve share of 73 percent but the seeded pair registered an impressive 69 percent win on it. Peschke and Srebotnik had an amazing co-ordination throughout the match as they saved the only breakpoint
they conceded and converted five out of eight breakpoint opportunities to their advantage to clinch the match with a 6-1, 6-1 score line.
