Sania Mirza celebrates her 25th birthday in her hometown – Tennis News
Sania Mirza, the tennis icon, celebrated her 25th birthday on Tuesday 15thNovember, 2011. She was accompanied with her beloved husband, former Pakistan cricket team captain, Shoaib Malik, to her hometown Mumbai
India where her parents arranged a mega party.
Mirza started playing tennis at the age of six and entered the international circuit in 2003. She featured in several tournaments and has been the only Indian tennis ace to have represented her country in US Open 2005. In August
2005, she touched her best form and climbed up to World No.42, her highest ranking to date, but couldn’t continue her prolific form and gradually declined several ranks in the upcoming years.
Sania Mirza had complete support from her parents from young age and proclaims “My mother took me to a coach, who initially refused to coach me because I was too small. After a month, he called my parents to say he'd never seen
a player that good at such a young age”.
She has done heroics for her country and laid the foundation for upcoming tennis players specially women from sub-continent. She won the Junior Wimbledon Championships doubles in 2003 and became the youngest Indian and the first
Indian woman to win a junior Grand Slam title. Mirza won Hyderabad Open doubles tournament in 2004 and became the youngest first Indian to become the WTA title holder.
The Indian tennis ace has accumulated several landmarks in her tennis career that includes her advancement to the fourth round of US Open in 2005, reached her second WTA final of Forest Hills Women's Tennis Classic, New York but
couldn’t clinch her first title. She flabbergasted Nadia Petrova in the second round of Acura Classic in the same year but couldn’t move to the next round, but her accomplishments helped her to break into top 50 rankings for the first time in her life.
Sania Mirza tied knot with the Pakistani cricketer, Shoaib Malik, last year in April. Soon after their news of marriage was aired her husband was struck with a controversy of his first marriage but it was denied by Shoaib Malik
on all platforms.
She has been struggling to make a mark in the field of tennis due to her chronic knee injury and she had her second surgery last month. She promised her fans to make a comeback soon but didn’t provide the exact deadline. Everyone
from subcontinent is waiting for her emphatic return to tennis arenas but it all depends on the speed of which she recovers from her left-knee injury.
