Sania Mirza considering singles return – Tennis News
Indian number one, Sania Mirza, is playing to make a comeback in the singles event at the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour.
Sania Mirza is considering starting her singles career again. She retired from singles after undergoing from series of injuries. The Indian wanted to focus on doubles and the London Olympics and so decided to quit singles in the end of the last season.
The Indian star has achieved great success in the doubles event this season. She recently paired up with Spain’s Nuria Llagostera Vives made a final berth at the China Open, WTA Premier Mandatory event held in Beijing, People’s Republic of China. After looking
at her success, she decided to participate at the Kremlin Cup.
"After Moscow, I will take a few days off and then start the gruelling off-season training. Then, after looking at how my body feels, I will take a decision on whether or not to play singles next season,"
Mirza was quoted in an interview to Hindustan Times.
The 25-year-old shared success with the in-form Russian, Elena Vesnina, with whom she captured several doubles titles. She then partnered with America’s Bethanie Mattek-Sands. However, the American challenger fell ill and so Mirza decided to play with Llagostera
Vives in Beijing.
The Indian commented further:
“We complement each other well on court. But her priority is singles right now. If I decide to focus more on singles, and if we play together next season, it shouldn't be a problem. I have spoken to a few others too. We are still trying to decide on the
partnership."
This season, Mirza’s performance was highlighted at the Pattaya Open, a WTA International event held in Pattaya City, Thailand. She bounced back to overpower Japan’s Ayumi Morita in a three-set thriller to progress. In the round of 16, the Indian carried
her rhythm and eventually dumped Great Britain’s Anne Keothavong in straight sets.
Mirza comfortably advanced into the quarter-finals. However, she was underplayed by the Taiwanese qualifier, Su-Wei Hsieh, in brutal straight sets.
The Indian contender played in few other WTA events but exited either in the opening round or from the qualifying competition. She started this season standing at world number 104 when she entered the qualifying competition at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
However, she fell at world number 238 when she played her last singles event in the qualifying competition of AEGON International in Eastbourne (lost to Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova).
