India’s leading female tennis player Sania Mirza scored an easy straight-sets victory over Ukrainian tennis pro Olga Savchuk in the final round of the qualifying singles at this year’s Family Circle Cup in Charleston, USA. Mirza undid Savchuk in under an
hour and thirty minutes, defeating the player 6-4, 6-3.
Mirza is currently India’s highest ranked WTA tennis player. In 2007, the 24-year-old made it as far up the charts as World Number 27, although her ranking has fallen to World Number 90 since then. The player, who hails from Mumbai in India, is right-handed
and has been part of the professional circuit since 2003. She has won a single WTA career title to date.
Olga Savchuk, on the other hand, is currently ranked World Number 147 by the WTA. She reached her highest ranking so far in 2008, when she progressed up the charts to become World Number 79. She currently resides in Nassau, Bahamas. The pro is 23 years old
and plays right-handed tennis, and has been part of the professional circuit since 2004. She has not won any titles over the course of her career so far.
Sania Mirza remained in charge for most of their match earlier today, undoing Savchuk to secure her place in the Family Circle Cup as a qualifier. The player committed just one double fault throughout the match, although her cause was helped by Savchuk’s
seven double faults. In addition to this, she was able to save eight of ten break points during the match. Mirza also successfully converted five of twelve break points against her Ukrainian opponent during the match. She dominated Savchuk while serving, and
dropped just six points in four service games. The match lasted less than ninety minutes, with Mirza sending Savchuk off with 55 per cent of the total points in the match.
This is the third consecutive meeting between the two players in which Mirza has emerged as the victor. Their first match was at the 2007 Australian Open, when Mirza was ranked World Number 53. Savchuk was Number 102 at that time. She lost their first-round
meeting in straight sets. Mirza’s most recent match against the Ukrainian pro was in 2008 at the Indian Wells event. Mirza was seeded twenty-first as World Number 32 at the time, and met Savchuk in the second round of the event. The Indian pro defeated Savchuk
in three sets, recovering from a set down to proceed to the third round of the tournament.
Sania Mirza will play in the main draw of the 2011 Family Circle Cup, meeting American tennis player Alison Riske in the first round of the event.
