Sania Mirza encourages the flourishing women's tennis in Asia – Tennis News
One of the two known sub-continent tennis professionals, Sania Mirza, has shown great interest in encouraging youngsters to choose tennis as their profession and she is extremely happy from the progress.
She stated, “I think we’re probably at the healthiest best in Asian women’s tennis. Tennis is growing in Asia.” She gave an interview in Paris during the year’s second Grand Slam tournament, the Roland Garros French Open.
Mirza has enjoyed career prize money of over 2.2 million dollars and was married to the former captain of Pakistan cricket team, Shoaib Malik but now she has to make a choice between her professional and personal priorities to
preserve her health. She stated, “That’s a call I’ll take, either playing just singles or just doubles.”
She has been struggling from niggling injuries and has already gone through three injuries on her right wrist and both knees. So, she needs to make a wise decision and might restrict herself from participating in tournaments apart
from majors. “It’s not the tennis. I’ve never doubted about the tennis. It’s more about the body”, she mentioned.
Asians have hardly witnessed a player presenting them at an elite platform except the likes of Aisam-ul-Haq, Rohan Bopanna, Mahesh Bhupathi, Leander Paes and Chinese number one, Li Na, who is the defending champion at the French
Open. Big continent with few tennis personalities is a disappointment for all Asians but the enhancement in the facilities provided to the youngsters especially in the part of the sub-continent and worth an applause.
Cricket, no doubt, is the pre-dominant sport in the sub-continent with every kid waking up with a dream of becoming a world class cricketer but the broadcast of football and tennis matches to this part of the world has definitely
distracted a lot of youngsters to new sports. Mirza stated, “Cricket is obviously like a religion in our country ... maybe that has something to do with it. For tennis, you need a court, you need racquets; you need balls. For cricket, you need a bat and a
ball and 22 people can play. In football, you need a ball and you can have so many people playing.”
No woman from India is ranked amongst the Top-500 players in the world and Mirza is the only one representing her country for a long period of time. She is eager to witness someone surpass her in ranking and prove to the world
that Asia is also capable of producing some world class talent in the field of tennis.
