Sania Mirza falls to Kathrin Woerle in the qualifiers – Rogers Cup 2011
Indian tennis star, Sania Mirza crashes out to German Kathrin Woerle in brutal three sets at the Rogers Cup’s final qualifying round. She was leading a set but later lost her track to register a 7-6(5), 5-7, 3-6 defeat on Sunday.
The German on the other hand qualified for the main draw of this WTA Premier event.
Qualifying eleventh seed, Mirza gave her all and succeeded to bag the opener. However, she made several unforced errors and double faults to gift away her serves and eventually suffered a brutal defeat in two hours and forty minutes
at the Rexall Centre in Toronto, Canada.
Mirza made quick in-roads and spilled first blood early on. She broke the German’s serve in the fourth game but lost her serve in the very next game. Adding further to her demise, the Indian lost her another serve in the seventh
game and went 5-3 down but she quickly counter-attacked in the tenth game and took the set to a tie-breaker. Mirza prevailed in it to clinch the opening set with a 7-6(5) score line. She spilled more errors, five double faults, lower first serve share and
failed to defend both breakpoints conceded but the Indian registered a tremendous 76 percent on her first serve share. She also converted two out of three breakpoint chances to her advantage.
The German got on track in the second set and earned an early desiderated break to take a 3-1 lead. Despite losing her edge in the fifth game, she maintained consistency in her game to reel off remaining serves. Woerle then broke
Mirza’s serve again in the last game to pocket the set with a 7-5 win. Woerle earned poor stats and a lower first serve share of 51 percent as compared to Indian’s 55 percent but she registered an impressive 70 percent win on it. She also saved two out of
three breakpoints faced and converted half of the four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
Mirza turned the tables around in the opening game of the final set as she earned the desiderated break in the very first game. She then held her opening serve to take 2-0 lead. However, the Indian lost her way in the end as she
gifted away her serve in the sixth and eighth game to eventually suffer a 3-6 defeat. Mirza clobbered a lower first serve share but earned a brilliant 70 percent win on it.
The German on the other hand will go on to face a local wild card entrant, Stephanie Dubois in the main draw.
